2017-2018 Season Community Relations Intern - Columbus Blue Jackets (Columbus, OH)

Internship Description: Community Relations

Department: Community Development

Mentor: Manager of Education and Community Partnerships

Overview

The Community Relations intern will assist with key projects directed to improving our community, sustaining the Blue Jackets’ reputation as a good corporate citizen, as well as assisting in the fundraising efforts for the Blue Jackets Foundation.

Duties and tasks:

School Assembly (Stinger’s Power Play)

  • Assists with scheduling school appearances.
  • Assists with prepping items needed for event, setup/tear down and execution of 25 school assemblies.
  • Captures photo of event.

Reading incentive and academic achievement (Book Jackets / Student Achievers)

  • Assists with day-to-day execution such as teacher/parent communication and prize fulfillment.

Stinger’s Reading Team

  • Assists Stinger with monthly appearance at libraries to hand out items to kids and take photos.

Stinger Appearances

  • Assists mascot with monthly appearances in the community to hand out items and take fan photos.
  • Assist with holiday parades by driving promotional vehicles.

Equipment Swap / NHL Green Initiative

  • Assist with distributing vouchers to local rinks for equipment donation.
  • Assist with set up/tear down and execution of annual equipment swap.
  • Log donated equipment all season-long through NHL Green net initiative.

Help maintain/updates to educator database.

Assist with prep and execution of seasonal events such as Golf Tournament, CannonBall, Pen Pal partnership.

Assist with game nights as needed for Foundation fundraising such as 50/50, silent auction and merchandise kiosk.

 Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the needs of community and how the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation are addressing those needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of event planning.
  • Knowledge and understanding of database management.
  • Understanding of basic guest relations techniques.

 Intern Benefits:

  • 20-30 hours per week to consist of weekday office hours, evening and/or weekend game nights and community events/appearances
  • Internship Timeline - September thru Mid-April (May-June pending playoffs)

Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in a four-year college or university.
  • Course credit required for internship.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel). 
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Facility Operations/Security: Maintenance
Assistant Building Engineer - Columbus Blue Jackets Arena Management (Columbus, OH)

Summary

Assists in the operation, inspection, maintenance and repair of Nationwide Arena facility equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Perform routine maintenance, such as inspecting drives, motors, or belts, checking fluid levels, replacing filters or doing other preventive maintenance actions.

Assist in the diagnosis of mechanical problems and help determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, schematics or parts catalogs, as necessary.

Assist in repairing machines, equipment, or structures, using tools such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, wrenches, or equipment such as precision measuring instruments or electrical or electronic testing devices.

Assist in the assembly, installation or repairing of wiring, electrical or electronic components, pipe systems, plumbing, machinery or equipment.

Clean or lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, or other parts of machinery.

Adjust functional parts of devices or control instruments, using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs, or straightedges.

Assist facility engineers with calibration and repairs of DDC and pneumatic systems.

Follow procedures for use of work orders and CMMS systems.

Adhere to OSHA, NFPA and other applicable safety codes.

Perform outside custodial duties such as snow removal as required.

Respond to emergency maintenance requests as required.

Summary

Support all marketing efforts through the design of forward thinking creative graphics that maintains the Columbus Blue Jackets brand across all platforms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Work with the creative team to fulfill every creative related request within the organization. If certain techniques/specialties are needed that cannot be met within this role, we look to outsource. I.e. video, motion graphics and broadcast graphics.

Work with Corporate Partnership and Activation Team for proposal, wrap-up and presentation creation.

Work with the creative team to design original elements including, but not limited to: newspaper advertisements, publications, e-mail marketing, web banners and pop-ups, sponsorship elements, signage, promotional and premium items, direct mail, TV graphics, digital and social media content.

Adapt design elements to carry the continuity of the Blue Jackets brand throughout all collateral.

Presents samples to supervisor or client for selection and approval. 

Review final layouts and suggest improvements as needed; present final layout to supervisor or client for approval.

Create finished layout, or prepare instructions for others to assemble, prepare final layouts and check proofs.

Review quality of final product before release to client.

Maintain image resource files. Assist in maintaining and establishing Marketing and Creative Services Department design policies.

Summary

Perform routine custodial work, minor maintenance, and repair work in the cleaning and upkeep of Nationwide Arena.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Responsible for the condition and cleanliness of spaces as assigned, which includes specialty locker rooms, restrooms, meeting rooms, and office space.

Disinfect rooms includes sweeping, mopping, dusting, trash removal, vacuuming, stocking glass cleaning, spot cleaning, carpet cleaning, wall washing and floor refinishing.

Performs bowl cleaning work which may include policing of liquids, sweeping of trash, and mopping of all seating areas.

Operate specialty equipment such as scrubbers, floor cleaners, vacuums, carpet cleaning machines, KaiVac restroom cleaning machines, etc.

Assists in oversight of contractor event and post clean work. Inspects work and redirects workers as needed.

Performs recovery-cleaning tasks as scheduled.
