Internships: Broadcast Operations
2015-2016 Season Broadcasting Intern - Columbus Blue Jackets (Columbus, OH)

Summary:

Assist the Director of Broadcasting with various production and administrative duties.

Responsibilities:

Game nights:

  • Ability to utilize recording device to obtain post-game interviews to be played back in radio post-game show.
  •  Ability to edit and post-game day highlights and post-game interviews to Blue Jackets social media outlets.
  •  Assist in set-up of post-game show (if show takes place off-site).
  • Assist broadcast talent (starting line-ups, intermission and post-game stats, escorting intermission guest to the home radio booth).
  • Assist Director of Broadcasting in escorting network affiliate guests to and from the booth (specifically Affiliate Night).                                                                                              

Non-game days:

  • Write and produce our weekly radio feature (Blue Jackets Weekly) that will be distributed to affiliate stations on the Blue Jackets Radio Network.  Would provide him or her experience in working with CBJ on-air talent, interacting with players and coaches, honing writing and scripting skills, working under a deadline.
  • Produce Blue Jackets Plays of the Week (weekly feature that runs in the intermission of a game broadcast).
  • Produce NHL News and Notes (weekly segment that airs during an intermission).
  • Preparation of affiliate presentations and mailings.
  • Assist in projects within Broadcasting Department (fulfillment of radio network benefits and requests).
  • Develop and produce podcasting content for BlueJackets.com. Work with Web Site Manager to learn how to post audio to the Podcast page.                                                                    

Education/ Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a two or four year college or university. Broadcast Journalism, Mass Communications, or a similar major highly preferred.
  • Previous experience at the campus radio or TV station, or a prior internship at a commercial/university broadcast outlet is preferred.
  • Knowledge of editing software like Adobe Audition is required.
  • Must have good communication skills, knowledge of hockey and the Blue Jackets.

Required Hours: Game nights: 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Non-game days 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (September through end of season).

2015-2016 Season Communications Intern - Columbus Blue Jackets (Columbus, OH)

Summary:

The student will assist Communications Staff with all departmental duties including the following responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Write and edit game-day program, publications, press releases and other written materials as needed.
  • Manage news clippings.
  • Organize and maintain photography archives.
  • Maintain and update media distribution lists.
  • Coordinate distribution of requested printed materials.
  • Manage game-day credential process and press box preparation.
  • Game night duties involve staffing press entrance and press lounge; assisting in distribution of game reports before, during and after the game.
  • Assist with development of media packets for Training Camp, Media Day and Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Special Project:

  • Serve as primary media liaison for Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) State Hockey Championship in March.  Coordinate between OHSAA, CBJ and arena staff to prepare press areas including press box and press conference room.  Oversee distribution of game statistics and facilitate post-game press conferences.     

 

Education/ Experience:

  • Current, junior or senior standing with a Journalism/Communications major is highly preferred.
  • Must possess strong writing and editorial skills.
  • Must be able to prioritize needs and responsibilities effectively, work with minimum supervision and be flexible with work assignments.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with InDesign is not required, but is preferred.

Summary:

The Corporate Development intern(s) will primarily assist the Partnership Account Specialist staff with the fulfillment of sponsorship assets.  Intern(s) will work on projects in the office in addition to game night responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform game night tasks related to fulfillment of sponsorship assets.
  • Photograph sponsorship assets during games for use in year-end partner recaps.
  • Manage Excel databases for media affidavits, in-game tracking, and in-market promotions.

The Digital & Social Media Intern will assist in maximizing awareness of the Columbus Blue Jackets digital space. Summary:

The Event Services Intern will be responsible for assisting with the day to day operations of Nationwide Arena, Event Services Department, as well as set-up and coordination of all arena events. Intern will be responsible for assisting with both back-of-house and front-of-house for each event and will get ample experience on both sides.

2015-2016 Season Premium Services Intern - Columbus Blue Jackets (Columbus, OH)

Summary:

This position will assist the service staff of the Premium Seating Department. The intern’s primary responsibilities will relate to the service of the suite, loge box, and terrace table accounts. The intern will be expected to assist with daily activities as outlined by the Premium Seating Specialist, as well as work for a majority of Columbus Blue Jackets home games and Nationwide Arena concerts/events. Hours and schedule will vary depending on the number of games and other events each week. The intern and Premium Seating Specialist will work together to determine weekly hours.

Daily Office Responsibilities:

  • Ticket order fulfillments and mailings for games and concerts (will receive training on Ticketmaster Archtics software).
  • Prepare spreadsheet for each game and concert/event of all suites, loges, and terrace tables.
  • Update client contact information and other documents as needed.

Game Day and Game Night Responsibilities:

  • Perform a full suite/club walk through to check for cleanliness, maintenance issues, and overall appearance each game day.
  • Assist Premium Seating Specialist in fulfilling game night experiences for premium clients such as: taking a scratched player to a suite for pictures/autographs, escorting guests to a radio booth or production room visit or Zamboni ride, and/or fulfilling and following up on any other pre-planned special experiences.
  • Ensure that all above-mentioned game night experiences are documented through photo or video and see that the appropriate client receives photo or video.
  • Communicate with other departments such as Guest Services, DNC Sportservice, Maintenance, Housekeeping, and Engineering as needed to report any guest, food and beverage, or building issues that arise.

Summary:

Interns will assist the Ticket Operations Department with order processing, fulfillment, Group Ticket distribution, and other duties as assigned. The Columbus Blue Jackets are seeking a passionate and hardworking individual who is committed to becoming a sales professional. 2015-2016 Season Video Production Intern - Columbus Blue Jackets (Columbus, OH)

Summary:

Create video web content for Jackets TV on BlueJackets.com

Responsibilities:

Training camp:

  • Assist with producing daily reports that cover a different angle of the preparation for the season each day. These reports will include b-roll, interviews and stand-ups with the help of a CBJ broadcaster.

Game days:

  • Daily practice reports: Shoot and edit video at the CBJ morning skate and the visiting team practice. Work with CBJ broadcast talent to shoot and later edit a pre-game package previewing that night's game.
  • Post-game production: Shoot and edit locker room interviews and post on website.

Non-game days:

  • Shoot non-game day interviews or features with broadcasters or players. Later edit and post video on Jackets TV.
  • Produce various feature videos centering on activities with the players, coaching staff and Blue Jackets departments (Community Development, Fan Development, Hockey Operations, etc). Help develop scripting, production requirements (camera set-up, lighting, micing, etc) prior to shoot date.
  • Develop additional video content ideas to be produced and posted on Jackets TV (BlueJackets.com) with direction and support of the digital media and marketing team.                                                                                                                         

Education/ Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a two or four year college or university. Broadcast journalism, mass communications, radio/television or a similar major highly preferred.
  • Ideal candidate will have prior classroom or hands-on experience with operating cameras, lighting systems, editing systems (non-linear systems like Avid, Final Cut or Adobe Premiere), audio, scripting, etc.
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ice hockey and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
  • Must be able to react under pressure.

 Required Hours:  Game days: 10a.m.-1p.m.; Game nights: 6:00 p.m. to 11 p.m. Non-gameday hours will be required for shooting and editing larger video projects and be determined a week by week basis.
