COMMUNICATIONS INTERN – FALL 2017

The Dallas Stars are looking for a qualified intern to join our Communications department for the semester.

The internship will provide coaching and opportunity for hands-on experience with the world of professional sports communications in a way that will leave you incredibly prepared for any future job that might arise in the communications field.

What you’ll learn:

  • The day-to-day tasks and responsibilities of a communications department during the NHL season
  • Learn the essential role of the communications department in all aspects of organization including corporate partnerships, ticket sales, community outreach programs, Dallas Stars Foundation, and hockey operations
  • How the overall messaging for a professional sports team is established, written and disseminated to media and general public
  • How to research, update and formulate statistical information for media including game notes, pre-game emails and game day info
  • How to complete necessary tasks for Stars home game days including credentialing process, press box setup and media hospitality efforts
  • How to compile and archive daily news clips
  • Observe interactions of the communications department with media, players and hockey operations officials at Stars practice

  

What we are looking for:

  • Candidates MUST BE enrolled in college and receive college credit for this position
  • A background in communications, sports information or public relations
  • Extremely strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with Adobe Indesign
  • High level of comfort and professionalism while having to interact with new people on a daily basis while representing the Dallas Stars Hockey Club.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from Dr Pepper StarCenter Frisco (located at the northeast corner of Dallas North Tollway and Sam Rayburn Tollway)

Finance: Payroll
Payroll Administrator - Dallas Stars (Frisco, TX)

JOB SUMMARY: The Payroll Administrator will perform all activities necessary to process multiple payrolls including maintaining related records, filing tax reports, processing involuntary deductions such as levies and garnishments, preparing accounting transactions and documents, documenting and updating procedures, and preparing special reports for management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage semi-monthly disbursement of payroll including garnishments, benefits and taxes consistent with federal and state wage and hour laws.

  • Work closely with Human Resources to ensure the processing of new hires, temporary workers, transfers, promotions and terminations is accurate and timely as applies to payroll and benefits.

  • Liaison with payroll outsourcer.

  • Oversight of the filing of accurate and timely federal, state and local payroll tax returns by payroll outsourcer.

  • Prepare and submit NHL escrow reports/reconciliations.

  • Manage Player dues deductions/remittance.

  • Manage garnishments deductions/remittance.

  • Reconcile and post payroll journal entry.

  • Reconcile payroll related balance sheet accounts.

  • Manage Purchase Card program, including maintenance of cards, limits and review of monthly statements.  Also includes posting monthly P-Card transactions to the GL.

  • Manage regular preparation of relevant management reports.

  • Other general accounting duties.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-5 years payroll experience.

  • Basic knowledge of accounting.

  • Must maintain strict confidentiality in all aspects of the job.

  • Proficient in MS Office, specifically MS Excel.

  • Working experience of payroll tax at the federal, state, and local levels including multi-state filings and payments.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Proven time-management skills.

  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Business Related Degree Preferred

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle objects and office tools, reach, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is exposed to an office environment, with noise levels usually moderate.
